The RALI-Press Universal Vice is a bit like a sash clamp, but is far stronger and much more versatile.
Because of the way they are designed they have a number of benefits over the traditional vice, or sash clamp.
- they clamp on the stronger end grain of wood, allowing a tighter grip, and less risk of bruising the wood,
- they allow workpieces to be turned to an angle in the vice for chamfering or rounding over (much easier than angling the plane),
- the clamp heads sit slightly proud when fixed to the side of a bench, allowing panels, etc. to be clamped firmly on the bench top for carving, routing, etc.
- it can be fixed to the side or top of a bench, or fixed to a board to form a mobile vice - G-clamp it to a table for a site bench, for example,
- both clamp heads move, so the workpiece can be moved along its length to offer a better working position
- you can fix more than one in line to make a long clamping station
- one clamp head has two different width Vee-grooves to make gripping round or small sections easy
The RALI-Press comprises a steel rail with robust ratchet, two sets of clamp-heads, one of which has an adjustable screw to clamp the workpiece. Both ends are moveable, and lock into the ratchet with a hardened steel plate on their underside. Once located the heads are held into position by a simple nut, which only needs to be hand tight (remember the work is done in the ratchet, not in the holding nut).
